Folio. 3 Bl., 40, 40, 17, 221 S., 1 Bl. Mit gestoch. Titel, Widmung und Frontispiz, 31 Kupfertafeln zu Aesops Leben und 110 halbseitigen Kupfern zu den Fabeln. Quergenarbter roter Maroquinband um 1780 mit goldgepr. Rückentitel und Fileten auf Rücken, Deckel, Steh- und Innenkanten, gefärbtem Schnitt und Marmorpapiervorsätzen.

Zweite Ausgabe des Meisterwerks des ersten und einer der wichtigsten frühen englischen Buchillustratoren. Die Erstausgabe erschien 1666 und ist extrem selten, da die meisten Exemplare dem großen Brand desselben Jahres zum Opfer fielen. Auch die vorliegende Ausgabe ist komplett und in gutem Zustand nur selten zu finden. Sie wurde um die 31 Tafeln zur Biographie Aesops vermehrt, die alle von Barlow gezeichnet und teils auch von ihm gestochen wurden. Der andere Teil dieser Tafeln wurde von Thomas Dudley, einem Schüler von Wenzel Hollar, gefertigt. Die Illustrationen zu den Fabeln alle von und nach Francis Barlow (um 1626 – 1704). Auch die in die Tafel gestochenen englischen Verse zu den Fabeln wurden für diese Ausgabe im Auftrag von Barlow erneuert. Die Verse der Erstausgabe stammen von Thomas Philibot, diejenigen der vorliegenden Ausgabe von Aphra Behn, damals auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer Popularität als Dichterin, Dramatikerin und Übersetzerin. Dazu mussten die Platten im unteren Teil poliert und neu graviert werden. „Der Handwerker, der das Polieren durchführte, befürchtete, dass der untere Rand des Entwurfs über dem Vers beschädigt werden könnte: An vielen Stellen sind noch Spuren der oberen Buchstaben der oberen Zeilen von Philipot vorhanden. In einigen Fällen musste eine kleine neue Tafel für den neuen Vers eingefügt werden.“ (Hodnett).– „Francis Barlow war der erste einheimische englische Buchillustrator – tatsächlich der führende interpretative Illustrator in England vor 1800.“ Otto Benesch von der Albertina in Wien nannte ihn „einen der größten Illustratoren aller Zeiten“. (Edward Hodnett, F. Barlow, 1978).– Komplettes Exemplar mit der intakten oft fehlenden oder zensierten „frivolen“ Tafel Nr. 17 in einem schönen Luxuseinband. Papierbedingt vereinzelt und meist im Rand etwas gebräunt oder minimal fleckig. S. 25 der Fabeln mit Papierfehler im unteren Rand, Einbandgelenke minimal berieben, gestochenes Exlibris auf Spiegel, insgesamt sehr gut erhalten.– Wing 703.– Weder bei Bodemann, Katalog illustrierter Fabelausgaben 1461-1990, noch in „Fabula docet“, noch seit 1950 im JAP.
